First phase of Manipur Assembly elections begin today, with 38 constituencies going to poll.

As many as 1,643 polling stations have been set up in areas spread over Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur and the hill districts of Churachandpur and Kangpokpi.

More than 11 lakh voters will decide the fate of 168 candidates in the fray.

Heavy security has been deployed in parts of the state amid a continual clash with the United Naga Council.

More than 250 companies of central paramilitary forces are on the ground with the Assam Rifles and Army aiding in providing security cover.

This election marks the debut of Irom Sharmila's People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) party.
